The Perfect Jar: The Mason Jar

Mason jars have been my new favorite thing. They remind me of baking soda because their uses are endless! Lately I have been using them to drink out of and I swear they even make my water look fancy. Mason jars add a nice touch to everything with little effort. I was thinking about how many things me and my family have done with mason jars and I had to put them all together into one post. Many of these ideas are referenced on my sister's blog, Melissa's Greetings. She is much better about documenting all of the fabulous crafts that we do in ourspare time.

I thought it was time for some more bunny love. I love fashion and bunnies and I think my sister found the ultimate combination in Fifi Lapin , "the world's most stylish bunny." Her blog is all about her fabulous life and her "to die for" fashions. The sketches are beautiful and just might be my favorite part. You can actually purchase them in Fifi Lapin's shop. I haven't decided which one I want the most but I will let you know when I finally decide. From Chanel to Valentino, Fifi Lapin really is "the world's most stylish bunny."

Framed Four Leaf Clover

A few weeks ago my husband found a four leaf clover. After he brought it home I carefully placed it between two sheets of paper and placed it under a few heavy cookbooks. After it was pressed I decided to preserve it in a small frame for him. I placed the four leaf clover on a small piece of white cardstock that I cut using the glass as a template and then put it in the frame. This was such a simple craft, I would love to try this with a flower too!

Today I went to go see Valentino: The Last Emperor at Film Forum in NYC. This is one of the most amazing films I have ever seen. My degree is in fashion design but you don't need an appreciation for fashion to appreciate the amazing story of Valentino and his extraordinary career. His love for beauty and fashion will move you and I feel priveledged that this film "featured access never-before allowed in the high temples of Haute Couture."

Homemade Beef Jerky

Beef jerky is my absolute fave. Spicy, Mesquite, BBQ, Peppered, any flavor, any brand. Each piece is a little slice of heaven. It's great for when I'm out all day on the bike as it doesn't spoil. It's also a great substitute for meal and health wise is really not bad for you. The only down turn? It gets a little pricey. Like $7 a bag pricey. So I decided to make my own. There are plenty of recipes on the net but I chose this one and added some of my own creativity to the mix (my notes are in parenthesis), it came out great.

Ingredients:

- 5 pounds of beef (any cut, preferably brisket as it is the leanest)

- 5 ounces of liquid smoke (find it in the spices aisle with the BBQ sauces, it's there I promise, just keep looking)

- 15 ounces of Lea & Perrins OR Worcestershire 15 - 20 ounces of teriyaki sauce

- 15 - 20 ounces of soy sauce (didn't have any so I just doubled the Worcestershire)

- 2 - 4 Tb. of garlic powder (used real garlic, minced)

- 2 - 4 Tb. of dark brown sugar

- 2 - 4 Tb. of onion powder (didn't have any, didn't use)

- 2 - 4 ounces of molasses OR dark corn syrup

- 2 - 4 tsp. of cayenne pepper (don't over do it, I like things spicy too but too much will just kill the meats precious natural flavor)

Directions:

- Cut meat and mix ingredients for marinade. (slice as thin as possible, freeze the meat for a 1/2 or so to help slice. Make sure to trim as much fat off as you can first as it wont dry like the beef and spoil)

- Cover and put meat in the refrigerator and let marinate for 24 hours.

- Cover oven rack with foil and place the meat across racks. (cover the bottom rack with foil to catch the drippings. Lay the meat on the top rack without foil so it dries from both sides. Use some Pam on the rack so you can clean it off easier when your done)

- Set oven to lowest temp 130 - 150 degrees. After the meat has stopped dripping, turn each piece over. (I didn't turn it over, doesn't matter really. But just make sure the meat is drying, not cooking)

- Cook for about 8 - 12 hours depend on what you like and remember to leave the oven door slightly open for ventilation. (Definitely leave the door open the whole time. Good jerky is made with slight heat and air flow so the meat is dried out, not cooked. I started at around 8 pm so I could have fresh jerky for breakfast)

- Enjoy (store in a Ziplock in the fridge as homemade jerky doesn't have the preservatives store bought jerky has, yet it still last a long time)

Remember ladies, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Fill that stomach with homemade jerky and that love will last a long time, just like the jerky.

Bunny Love

I was inspired to share my love for bunnies from a post by Peonies and Polaroids. Her bunny love made me want to share my bunny love! I have large collection of bunny related items but this painting is my most recent purchase. I got it from Urban Outfitters about 6 months ago and I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. I loved the painting because they are cute little bunnies taking on a storm. It kind of reminds me that you can get through anything, no matter how choppy the waters of life can be.

I found this article on the website of one of the many "Craft Mafias" that have been popping up here and there. You know if you're a part of one, please don't break my knee caps for exposing you. This article in Entrepreneur Magazine speaks about the crafting world fighting today's economic downturn. More and more people are apparently turning to crafting as an inexpensive form of entertainment. Also one that results in an actual finished product to enjoy. So instead of turning on the old flat screen, make something and contribute to fighting the economic battle of today.

I just got the new Anthropologie catalog in the mail today and as usual, I want everything! I fell in love with one of their display photos of the Moon Garden Votive. They show it displayed on a dock near the water in this picture but anyone could do this on an outdoor table. I love the idea of a grouping of all different kinds of votives. This would be perfect for an evening dinner party or summer night BBQ!

In honor of National Scrapbooking Day I took some time this morning to organize some of my keepsakes that I want to scrapbook. In my crafty room I have two trunks full of mementos because I'm sentimental and save everything! I was inspired by a baby welcome card I saw on The Crafts. Dept. It was such a cute idea I had to try it out for myself! Mother's Day is right around the corner and I thought this would be the perfect card.

{Supplies}

Pencil

Self-Healing Mat

Protractor or Glass to Trace a Circle

White 5 x 7 Cardstock with Envelope

All-Purpose Scissors

Fine-Tip Marker or Pen

Flower Embellishment

{1st, trace your circle}

{2nd, cut out your circle and place your flower embellishment on the inside of the card so its peeking out the front through the circle}

{3rd, with a pencil, draw in your stem}

{4th, with your fine-tip marker or pen, trace over your penciled in stem and you are finished!}

I love projects where you only need a few supplies and the result is something so unique and elegant. Especially now when we are all trying to simplify, its nice to have projects that you can create from supplies that you have laying around the house. I hope you have time for some scrappy time today!

Tissue Paper Flowers

I have always wanted to give tissue paper flowers a try. I followed Martha Stewart's tutorial for Crepe Paper Flowers. This is a great project because it doesn't require a lot of supplies and the result comes out so pretty!

Crepe paper in various colors

3/16-inch wooden dowel

Small saw or clippers, for the dowel

Floral tape

Masking tape

{Instead of using crepe paper, I used tissue paper}

Perforating My Motorcycle Jacket

Nichole and Melissa have all these great posts so I thought I would contribute with my macho craft that I did last night, yes that's right, I said macho craft. Summer is here and I can finally get some good Sunday rides in without freezing my hands and face off. I bought this jacket last summer and only wore it a couple times at night as it was too hot for our humid New York summers. So I decided to perforate the leather to get some good airflow through the jacket when out on the road.

I figured I wanted about an inch between each perforation so I found a website that lets you size and download graph paper for free. I punched holes through the paper so I could use it as a template on the jacket.

Nichole thankfully had some of her fashion chalk handy so I used it to mark where the holes will be punched on the jacket through the template. It created a nice grid for me to then use the handy, but not so manly, Martha Stewart Screw Punch. The tool twists as you push down so it cuts a perfect whole in the leather. I used a healing board behind where I was cutting so I didn't cut through the back as well.

I was thoroughly impressed with my crafting skills as was Nichole when she saw the finished product. It looks great and doesn't compromise the jacket fit at all. I can't wait to test it out on Sunday as it looks like the weather is going to be great.

The Original Glass Straw

My sister emailed me an article about these glass straws last night and all I could say is "shut up!" I am officially in love with these glass straws from Glass Dharma. I drink everything through a straw, I can't drink it if it doesn't have a straw in it! Now I no longer have to feel guilty about throwing away all that plastic because I can just wash these. Custom Curtain Rods

Last Christmas I got the Domino Book of Decorating and it inspired me to take the time to make my living space something I really loved. One of the first decorating projects were these custom curtain rods. First we measured the length of all our windows and went to Home
Depot. We purchased 3/4" steel piping, flanges and elbows. The total came to around $90 for three windows. Home depot is great because they cut and thread the pipes for you right then and there for no extra charge. When we got home we measured where the flanges would be drilled to the wall using the template of the actual flange. Before drilling the rods to the wall we had to assemble everything. Slide the curtains onto the rod first, attach the elbows to the pipes and the flanges to the elbows and you are ready to hang. We drilled holes into the wall where we marked and installed anchors to support the weight of the rod. Then used countersunk screws to secure everything to the wall. For steel piping, they actually add a very unique and elegant touch to each room. I just LOVE my custom curtain rods!

Brooklyn Botanic Garden

This weekend we had perfect weather here in NY, enjoying the weekend was a must! We all took a trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and it is one of my favorite places to visit. If you live in the area and ever need to get away and revive your creativity, this is the place to go. Inspiration is everywhere and Melissa captured all of it in her amazing photography. These Seaside Paper Lanterns from Martha Stewart remind me that summer is right around the corner. They are so pretty and so easy to use, all you have to do is take them out of the package, unfold and hang! Oldie But a Goodie

Our post on Martha's amazing craft space inspired Melissa and I to work on our own crafty spaces (see Melissa's craft space below). I craft all over the place but my main craft area is in my office. There was something that I didn't like about the space and I just couldn't put my finger on it, but I finally figured it out! This brown bookshelf was feeling outdated and didn't really match anything. All it needed was a fresh coat of white paint and now an old piece of furniture is a pretty new bookshelf! All I used was a can of leftover white trim paint and an extra paint brush I had laying around. I was surprised it only needed two coats of paint. I can't wait until the shelf is dry and ready for my supplies. Check back tomorrow for new pictures of my craft space!

If you saw my crafty space yesterday you could probably tell I have a small ribbon collection. So I was very excited today to see that the Martha Stewart Craft of the Day was a ribbon bookmark. As you can see we were inspired by the pastel colors of Easter this week. I met Martha Stewart!

On April 3rd I traveled to Westbury, NY for Martha Stewart's book signing. Even with car trouble and the pouring rain, I still made it. I bought two copies of Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia of Crafts and she signed both of them! My sister, ScrappyTime.com's head crafter is Martha's #1 fan. It was so nice of her to sign two copies, one for me and one for my sister! If you are creative and crafty, you have to buy this book. I can't wait to start crafting!

Paper Silhouettes

Paper silhouettes were surprisingly simple to create. To make ours we carefully cut out two profile pictures and used a pencil to trace them onto a sheet of black card stock {an extra scrapbook refill page we had}. After cutting out the silhouettes we used double sided tape to adhere them to pretty pieces of green card stock. A simple and inexpensive craft that can be put in a frame to give as a gift and of course our favorite, put in a scrapbook!

Inspiration for Crafty Spaces: Sketches

A simple sketch can easily be turned into your favorite artwork! I could never find a place to put these four very large sketches. Instead of finding room, I found a solution! I took pictures of all four sketches and put them on my computer. In Photoshop I changed the color to sepia and changed the size to fit my white, 5" x 7" frames. I printed them out on an all-purpose paper (nothing fancy), placed them in the frames and voila, I now how some fabulous artwork!

Inspiration is everywhere! Our favorite way to make something out of nothing is pulling inspiration from the most obvious places, like our favorite magazines. This balloon artwork was inspired by a November 2008 issue of Vogue. With a simple ribbon and paint chips cut out into various circles, a Dior advertisement can turn into a beautiful piece to place on a scrapbook page, on the front of a greeting card or put in a frame!

You don't need a lot of room to be crafty as long as you are surrounded by things that inspire you to create. The starting point for our inspiration board was the vintage map of Paris after we saw one on Made By Girl and thought it would be so pretty in a frame. We found this crepe paper flower craft at craftideas.info. Their directions were simple and so easy to follow. For our flowers we used aqua blue crepe paper and white tissue paper. We loved how ours turned out and who says flowers can't be aqua blue?
